Is there a plan for Gitpod Classic EOL April 2025?

Hi,

I have been familiarizing myself with CodeRoad (used for freeCodeCamp lessons within Gitpod).

With the Gitpod Classic end-of-life scheduled for April 2025 looming, what’s the plan for freeCodeCamp?

As mentioned in the challenge pages, you do not have to use Gitpod:

Seems the options may be,

  • Remove Gitpod from the options with no replacement, or
  • Provide and support an alternative replacement.

Has support for any alternatives been considered? I’ve seen people in this forum refer folks who’d reached Gitpod’s limits to use Replit.

If Replit is a possible alternative to list in the challenge pages, does anyone know of a way to turn off the Repl without having to wait for the 1-hour inactivity. That 1-hour really sucks the time allotment for free accounts.

Hope this gets a good conversation going. Cheers!

There will be a new environment sooner than that, it’s being worked on

Cool. Is this the new curriculum authoring platform referenced in Things we are working on this year!?

no, that is for contributors, not for campers to do the coursework

there are multiple things being worked on

for the coursework it’s more freeCodeCampOS that is of interest

Gotcha.

Yeah, my interest is in CodeRoad specifically. Was hoping there might be a fork, or some effort to nudge the maintainer for an updated release, and maybe some alternative to Gitpod in the works.

Trying to create a PHP tutorial, but have run into issues.

they stopped supporting CodeRoad actually, so freeCodeCamp is moving to something else

So is a good idea to take the relational database course? will it be updated or will it ended up deprecated with gitpod?

right now gitpod is still surviving so it’s still on gitpod, if gitpod stops working we can switch to something else
