Learn String Manipulation by Building a Cipher - Step 50

Describe your issue in detail here.

Hi, so I’ve been stuck on this step. I’m being told to use the def keyword to declare the new function, although it seems to me I have done so.

Your code so far

# User Editable Region

text = 'Hello Zaira'
shift = 3
 def caesar():
    alphabet = 'abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz'
    encrypted_text = ''
    for char in text.lower():
        if char == ' ':
            encrypted_text += char
    else:
        index = alphabet.find(char)
        new_index = (index + shift) % len(alphabet)
        encrypted_text += alphabet[new_index]
    print('plain text:', text)
    print('encrypted text:', encrypted_text)

Learning to describe problems is hard, but it is an important part of learning how to code.

Hello!

It looks you indented the function itself. It has to be on the same level as “text” and “shift”. Just the function body has to be indented one level higher.

It would make sense, but when I take away the indentation of the function I get told every line beneath the “shift” should be indented

Try the following:

  • Put everything on the first level, including the body.
  • Select the entire code of the body, from “alphabet” to the last print.
  • Press tab once.

This is how to indent a function:

code
code

def function():
    func code
    func code

code
code

Hope you got a solution for this. It not, after declaring the def caesor(): function, select all code under it and press tab key once. That fixed mine. Thanks
