Ona vs. Docker?

I started the Relational Databases Curriculum about a week ago, following the original instructions that used Docker and the Dev Containers extension for VS Code.

I saw that the docs now recommend using Ona, so I tried it out. I was able to complete the Build Five Programs project, but I had a tough time getting it to work at first. I ran into problems with the browser-based editor (top of the screen was getting “shifted up” and cut off), and even more issues when trying to open the Ona workspace in VS Code locally (extension inconsistency). I only managed to move forward after finding this forum post, which gave me the steps I needed.

Now I’m wondering:

  1. Is Docker still a supported option for completing the course, or is everyone expected to move to Ona?

  2. For learners using Ona, does the free tier realistically last through the entire Relational Database curriculum, or will we hit the paid limits?

  3. Has anyone else had problems with Ona’s editor (in-browser or local VS Code), and what solutions worked for you?

I want to make sure I’m setting myself up with the right workflow before continuing deeper into the curriculum.

Thanks!

Yes it is, you can continue using that method

Ona is really new, I don’t know how many hours are available

Yours is the second post about Ona I have seen, it’s really new, and personally I have not tried it yet

Hello there

The local setup is currently the recommended method.

Currently, the free tier offers >40 hours per month. (depends on chosen configuration, though)

Yes, and the Ona engineering team is aware of this. If I recall, using Tab to change focus to an element at the top of the window brought the view back to normal.
