Opportunity Costs and Growth

Hello All

I’m at a peculiar point in my current (non-tech related) job. The need to make the jump and start a job search was previously not at the forefront. Leveling up was at the forefront, job search was half baked attempts here and there.

I have applied to dozens of positions on LinkedIn, a lot of them were flooded with applicants, and some were local and not flooded…no luck with either.

Recent events at my job has tempted me to shift focus from leveling up in my limited free time (I have two toddlers), and start seriously focusing on the job search.

Resumes can always be better, but I can’t add experience to it. So I want to leave it out of the question.

A question for those currently in the field:
Am I even hirable yet? (Junior engineer/ full stack)

Does my current portfolio and/or GitHub, reflect a job ready developer? Or should I keep focusing on my projects

Portfolio
GitHub

Keep building complex projects.

Ariel, thanks for the feedback. My current project is meant to be a deployable project and bound for production (in at least some capacity). Should I steer away from projects like this while I am trying to break through? I can see myself working on this for a while (its fun and fresh).

Should I start whipping out some smaller stuff with less scope, not like a “todo-list/pokedex” but something in similar size?
(Ive been reaching for project ideas Ive had in the past and related to my current field…sort of low hanging fruit for me lol)

PS. Ive been working my way down Quency’s/FCC’s podcasts and you already know I’m about to skip ahead for you, haha!

Hey Greg,

Is this your 1st time into software industry ?

  • If yes, then start with something bit easier instead of Full Stack Developer, try either Frontend / Backend

  • Join local tech meetups, increase your network

  • What kind of jobs are high in demand in your city / state ? Make sure you keep building, learning accordingly

  • Build projects with a dedicated, motivated team members instead of alone

  • Do checkout Y Combinator jobs ( you can check other VC jobs page as well but this is my favourite one ) page and start applying for “internship” positions.

All the very best, don’t hesitate to ask further queries

Tried to undo “flagging” this reply but couldn’t figure it out. Anyway, thanks for the reply.

Hello,

the flag hasn’t appeared in our queue yet. I will simply reject it if it still does.
