Why if more often then not there is no underline wanted on the links, why does it remains a default setting? there must be a reason would someone share it with me? lol, and out of all the things it could be called, “text decoration”? why isnt it just something like "a: [ underline: none?
Because it is a well-known and common identifying decoration for a link. We keep it for backward compatibility with our brains (expectations). Just like how we have expectations about where the navigation is located on the page or other such commonalities. Without any identification, you can’t tell it is a link at all.

There is no consensus that says links can’t be decorated using the default styles. But it is true that a lot of designs try to pretty it up in different ways. That doesn’t mean there is anything wrong with the default, it just isn’t super pretty.
It is a text decoration, just as line-through
is a decoration so is underline
. It is not a link style, it is a text style.
