This new editor supports multiple files and folders and more features.
It looks like they removed the single HTML, CSS, and JS panes.
I like the new editor but wished they also had the three pane one too. Because I can see how this new one can be overwhelming for beginners. The beauty of the old one with just the three panes was it was really easy to get started with.
Having both options would be nice. So beginners can start with the old 3 pane one and then move to the new one later on.
I haven’t opened CodePen in quite a while - this is the first time I’m seeing the new editor. I haven’t actually used it, but it looks nice. It’s a pretty big shift from the old one.
Wonder why they changed it - the old one was around for so many years.
I made quite a few little projects with the old editor - so it’s a bit sad to see it go. It was a quick way to throw together some code without having to do any setup. I’m sure you can still do that with the new layout, but the old one was so simple.
I haven’t browsed the pens on there in quite a while either - always some really impressive stuff to see there.
You can still get back to the old way if you want.
Classic CodePen users may prefer to only focus on the body which can be achieved using the Classic Block. Rename the index.html file to index.pen.html and remove any extra HTML.
I haven’t used CodePen in a very long time. It’s great for beginners as you can instantly preview without having to do much setup. Also the ability to share links to pens.
I like how pens now include link and script elements, instead of handling that in the background. Not seeing those elements somehow made me feel like it wasn’t complete.
I like editors that do not force a specific number of files. Personally, I would default CodePen to being simpler, and have the onboarding explain what advanced features can be enabled, but change and adoption is difficult
I remember listening to a podcast episode a while back where Chris Coyier had mentioned they were working on this new editor and hoping to release it soon.
My guess is that maybe users were asking for an editor that was similar to the other online ones like codesanbox?
Well for me I haven’t tried CodePen editor but others are saying that it is one of the powerful code editor, but I’ll try it out to see how powerful it is for the first time.
