Best Laptop for Programming – Why Review Sites Got It Wrong

Hey everyone,
I am in a funny situation. I’ve been looking to buy a new laptop mainly for programming, but somehow this has turned into a bigger debate at home than I ever imagined!

I shortlisted a few options, but every time I bring them up, my wife has a completely different opinion. What started as a simple “just get a laptop for coding” task has now turned into a full-on comparison session in our living room.

To solve it peacefully, I went through expert reviews from trusted sources like TechRadar, The Verge, The New York Times, and Wirecutter. The catch? Almost all of them suggest different laptops and rate them nearly the same!

So now, I think the only way out is to ask the real experts here — the programmers and developers who actually use these machines every day.

Here are the top contenders I’ve been considering for programming work:

  1. Apple MacBook Pro (M3/M2 series)

  2. Dell XPS (15/16 series)

All of them look great on paper, but specs and reviews can’t beat actual hands-on experience.

That’s why I’d really appreciate hearing from you all:

  • Which one would you personally recommend for programming?

  • Have you tried any of these for long-term coding projects?

  • How’s the battery life, comfort, and reliability in real-world use?

Your real experiences will definitely help me finally settle this “laptop debate” at home once and for all.

Thanks in advance!

This sounds super clickbatey, by the way

Yeah. I was ready to remove this as spam, based on the title.

In terms of those two laptops, it depends on whether you prefer MacOS (the Apple), Windows (the Dell), or Linux (the Dell, with a little work).

I’ve used a MacBook Pro at a previous job, although not the M series. It was fine. I currently use a Dell XPS 15. It’s fine. I find their hardware performance for coding pretty similar, although the Dell holds up to a full day of running Node a tiny bit better. MacOS is my least favorite operating system, but that’s a matter of preference. Neither of those computers would be my first choice, but they’re both fine.
