Need help on my LinkedIn profile

I’m going to start to apply some jobs. I’m a career changer to web dev, my current job has literally nothing to do with web dev. Should I include it in my LinkedIn profile? If not, what should I put in my work experience section, or should I leave it blank?

You should include your current job in your employment history because it demonstrates that you are able to hold and perform a job. In your resume, when describing your current job, try to focus on the skills which are transferrable and not industry specific. For example, if you have experience training new hires, that is a skill that is useful in all careers.

Hey Filics! As you start your job search, scaling your outreach will be key. You can try Meet Alfred or Linked Helper if you want a scalable LinkedIn automation tool to manage networking.
For that outreach to be effective, your profile needs to be solid. So yes, 100% include your current job! A blank work history is a bigger red flag than non-tech experience. The trick is to reframe your duties. Translate them to highlight transferable skills like project management, client communication, and problem-solving. This shows recruiters you’re a well-rounded professional, not just a coder. Good luck

What to put in your LinkedIn work experience section:

  • List your current (non-dev) job in a slimmed-down way (transferable skills). Add your projects under “Experience” as well. LinkedIn allows you to list them like jobs.

Example:

Web Developer (Freelance / Projects) — 2023 - Present

Built a full-stack app with React, Node, and MongoDB ….. etc

This gives recruiters something to anchor you as a developer, even before you land your first dev job.

Should you leave it blank? No — a blank work experience section can make it look like you’ve been inactive. It’s better to: Keep your old job (short description). Add your web dev projects, freelance work, or internships as new entries.
