Hello, I started learning web development few days ago and after some research I realised that a lot of web developers on forums and online know more than just HTML and CSS. And there’s so much technological advancements today that maybe learning HTML and CSS are not enough anymore, however I’m trying to get a job as soon as possible due to my financial situation, and I was wondering if it’s possible nowadays to get a job as a web developer with just HTML and CSS?, or do I have to dive into JavaScript as well?
If you have only HTML and CSS but you are also an artist or have a strongly designed portfolio with deep knowledge of topics like accessibility, internationalization/localization, user-centered design principles, Figma and Adobe illustrator, you may be able to apply for a job as a UX designer, but not a web developer.
In today’s market and what is required for the job, you will need to have a solid foundation and experience in core programming and more then HTML and CSS.
The days of getting a job quickly are truly over.
Tech is not the best place to get a job quickly especially coming from a self taught background.
Tech is a good place to build a career but it takes years to get there. And takes more practice and hard work to stay there.
So if you need a job, I would highly suggest looking into other fields for right now like maybe food service, retail, office assistant type jobs, etc.
Study your local market to see what types of jobs are available and in demand immediately to address your immediate financial concerns.
Then you can learn to code after work.
Hope that helps
This is a great idea! I used to learn graphic design so I have knowledge of design fundementals and stuff like that. I also know how to use Figma and Adobe Illustrator, so I might actually end up applying as a UI/UX designer, and take some time to dive into coding and learning more complex stuff. Thank you for your answer!
Thank you for your insight! I guess I have to work hard and not work fast, the only problem is I’m afraid if I get a job in retail or something like that it’s going to take a lot of time from my learning and I’ll end up reaching my goal a lot later than I have planned. So I thought about freelancing as a way to support myself at the moment, but I do have to pick projects based on my current skill set. I’m in an awkward place where I need to get a job but I also need to learn all the time so I can advance quickly.
No.
You should expect it to take years of work to get job ready with JS. Some people do it faster but you shouldn’t plan on that. So, if you need a job now, get a job with the skills you have now. Web development expects JS experience.
Learning how to code while balancing a full time job does take a lot of energy and effort.
it is not easy.
But that is how it has to be unfortunately.
Unfortunately, when the market was crazy hot and companies where hiring all over the place, it created this false narrative that you can just learn for a few months and jump into a high paying job.
But now that the market has normalized and things are more competitive for jobs, it will take a while to build up the skillset before getting a job.
Even in freelancing.
It is just as competitive there.
Look at tech as a long term investment.
Where you will need to work other jobs to pay the bills in the short term.
But if you take the time to invest in your skills and build a solid foundation, then you can have a successful tech career. it will just take time.
Hope that helps
I am sorry but this has not been enough in over 15 years and most people don’t even consider this “coding”. If you want to be a full on web dev, you will need to learn a lot more. This is enough if you was to be a designer for web or email though. I say this as I have met several people who confuse what a web designer are and web developer are all the time. So if you are interested in designing, it may be enough for you. Of course you still need to learn all the tools for graphic design.
No, you won’t get only with HTML and CSS.
