Getting back on track

Hey all — first-year BCA student here. Started learning Java on my own over the summer and had a solid stretch where things really clicked — built a few small projects (ATM system, quiz game, number guesser). Once college started (now also learning C, embedded systems, and HTML), I lost momentum for about a month — trying to get back to consistent daily work now instead of another burnout-and-crash cycle.

Still figuring out exactly which direction I want to take this — open to exploring different paths rather than locking into one thing too early. Right now the focus is just showing up daily and not overloading myself. Would love to hear how others here handle restarting after a slump, or just have some company while getting back into a rhythm.

Hey @stillcompiling , thanks for sharing!

I’ve had my fair share of restarts too. What helps me is not being too hard on myself when I fall off track. No matter why I stopped, I always remind myself that if it’s important enough, I need to get back to it. Instead of wasting time blaming or feeling bad, I focus on getting back on track.

Know your why, remember your why, and restate your why if necessary.

Starting with small steps or daily minimum tasks, and not starting from scratch if I can help it, but picking up where I left off, also makes a difference.
