Can you use your portfolio to apply for a job ?
Can you use a portfolio to apply for a job? Sure. I’d even go so far as to say that it is necessary.
Can you use the portfolio page you built as an FCC project? You could but I don’t think it would be a good idea. When you built that, you didn’t really know what you were doing. I’d want to make a new one, after you learn the front end libraries, at the very least. Showing you can use a front end library will go further than just plain beginner HTML and CSS.
You can include a link to either a portfolio webpage or a GitHub profile with your application. Your resume is still what will get you an interview and the interview itself will still be the determining factor. The benefit of having shared a body of work is that it can give the interviewer something specific to ask about, especially if you don’t have relevant professional experience. I would say that in my (completely anecdotal) experience, interviewers look at a candidate’s portfolio/repository about half the time it is included. Honestly, I’ve seen it help candidates and I’ve seen it hurt candidates. Generally speaking, I would advise only sharing work samples that you are interested in talking about at length.
(My advice is based on applying for salaried developer positions that don’t have a heavy design component. If you are trying to freelance or if you are a designer, a portfolio is very important.)
Would you have an idea on how to get started building a portfolio? I work as a freelancer, and I am in some communities and job boards, I would like to remain a freelancer so I am trying to get a portfolio built. Should I wait until I know more about web development before creating a portfolio or should I just go ahead and create one?
