Hi! I want to start applying to jobs soon probably after I get one or two more certificates, but I was wondering if I could have suggestions on what kind of projects to make for my resume to show that I have enough skills. I want to make something that shows versatility. I have skills in html, css, python, and javascript.
So far I made a simple website about my dog but obviously that’s not impressive enough. Or what can I add to the website to make it impressive?
I would love to make a certain project but I am afraid it is too brainrotted for employers to take seriously . Should I maybe design a webpage for an online school?
I think with the skills I have now. Front end makes sense so what do I make to showcase I can do a job like that?
Look at jobs in your area and look for what they are looking for.
“Enough” is meeting the requirements and then some so you stand out, and meet the described baseline. You could go even further and look at non-entry level jobs at the same company to pickup what they are looking for higher level roles. Not to apply, but just get an idea of what they are looking for as a company as a whole.
Obviously this can be intimidating, but if you want to know the bar of what is looked for, the job posts that you’d want to apply for is the bar.
So static sites are not that impressive. A full stack website is slightly more impressive. A working web app with production grade quality you learned via self taught, blood sweet and tears is impressive.
Of course this isn’t easy, but that’s what is required to stand out if you are applying out of the blue. I usually say there’s only one project you can make that makes you a complete lock for the job, everything else only slightly increases your odds. If you can take a company’s product, build a completely better product, start taking market share then apply, then yea you are probably a lock for whatever job you are applying too lol. But this is fantasy and unrealistic, so yea everything you build will increases your chances only slightly. The more you do, the more slightly impressive it is.
Thanks for the advice! I saw some companies in my area and they all seem to be healthcare so maybe I can make something related to that. I’m not sure what yet though but thanks for the advice this is a good start.
You could build a portfolio website. Everyone does one, however, this is your chance to showcase your skills and abilities. Try and make it looks as professional as possible, but don’t share things not related to your work ambitions.
Find some common ground between your interests and the market. Then research the market, and look for gaps or things that are not working well. Based on your findings, make an app that targets a specific segment of the market that addresses a real business problem.
This is a lot to take in- but expected! Thank you for the advice! I am still figuring things out…unfortunately I don’t think there’s much related to my personal interests plus coding…maybe I could do something educational though. Actually as I am writing this I came up with an idea. THANKS!
