Basically what he’s saying is this. If all you do is follow along some curriculum without really engaging with what you do, you are not going to establish the independent mindset necessary to be a successful developer.

Up to about 5-6 minutes I heard nothing wrong until he started to say that you don’t need to read vanilla lagnguages documentation to learn how to use it. You just need to learn how to do what you want to do to start building stuff.

His point is this, do not follow along and build the same stuff everyone else is building. Don’t just copy people. If you can go to a website and visually recreate that website and it’s features really close to how it looks only by looking at the page (not the code) because you know what you are doing and how to do what you want rather than just copy what you are told to type; then you are going to learn a lot more and show what you can do.

No matter where you learn to code, you need to decide if you’re a hobbyist or a professional. That’s the point. So use whatever you want and continue your learning constantly reading standards, original documentation, history, etc. You’ll be fine wherever you learn if you’re learning well.

My opinion? That video was click bait. I stopped watching after 2 minutes, but if I were to give him the benefit of the doubt, it boils down to this.

Never approach coding as if it is easy, or that you have “arrived”. Just like any other industry, campers still need to work hard to get places. FCC doesn’t guarantee employment, but gives you tools.

It’s mainly a video listing things he dislikes about freeCodeCamp and promoting his own course, if you want to use freeCodeCamp use freeCodeCamp, if you want to use another course use another course, freeCodeCamp isn’t a one size fits all type program. We are here to help but everyone’s learning style is different and some people may learn better with an approach different from freeCodeCamp’s.

While I also dislike the term “trap” he’s entitled to his opinion.

Well, that’s a bit of a Strawman’s attack on his part. FCC is not saying that that is all you should do. I don’t know if FCC mentions it explicitly, but certainly the vibe in the forum is to encourage people to go out and build things and clone things. The fact that FCC (or any other bootcamp) has people working on the same project does not mean that people are restricted to only building those same projects.

I mostly agree with the guy, but he’s focused on visual aspects(HTML,CSS) of the work, not the programming(Javascript).

Becoming a web developer for regular people is a daunting task, there’s no silver bullet (if there is, I bet they charge a lot for it). One should attack from multiple angles to tackle with such problems, and FCC is just one of them, It’s naive to expect hand holding, FCC barely provides some road signs so you don’t get completely lost but it’s up to you to find the way.
Make good use of the Internet, all of this is possible because of it.

All of his arguments apply equally to the Udemy courses he wants his viewers to buy. Also, he seems to think that you don’t need practice writing algorithms because all that matters is being able to write CSS. Yeah, seems legit.

This guy just wants to gain views and affiliate traffic by saying something he knows will attract attention. At this point, he’s gotten 38 just from this forum topic alone.
