I’m looking for work & wondering whether most people are fitting in FCC w/full-time work? Is it still possible to get this done in a year w/a full-time job or do I have to work part-time? Thanks in advance for any advice or info.
Hey,
I’m working roughly full time. I’ve been working pretty hard at it, but I have a slight headstart, having studied programming decades ago.
My advice? Just set a goal for the minimum time you’re going to spend a day. Just keep at it. Don’t worry so much about the destination as the journey. Just keep putting one foot in front of the other.
I work full time. I really just started down this path, but I’m devoting as much time to it as I can. Most weekdays, that comes down to a good five to six hours which is fine progress for me. I’m doing P1xt’s web dev with com sci path and making decent progress, so I’m pretty pleased so far. I don’t know how long it’ll take me, but I’m hoping that if I work hard, I can be developed enough to find a job at the beginning of next year.
It’s certainly possible. The problem is that it all boils down to how good you are at studying by yourself.
You can study 12 hours everyday and learn very little, read entire books that get you nowhere, etc… As for the effort that freecodecamp requires and the complexity of the projects, a year is far more than enough.
The bottleneck will always be discipline and efficiency when learning new technologies.
The (very rough) estimate of 1 year is, I believe based on the assumption that you are spending 40 hours a week working on Free Code Camp. Some people are able to move through challenges faster than that, others take their time. As someone who also works full time, my main advice is to figure out how much time per day you can reasonably dedicate to studying and to set aside specific hours for that. You will honestly get more benefit out of spending two hours a day on your studies than intermittently binging.
I work full time, 48 to 56 hours a week on average. So I can tell you that it is possible to get all three certs in that time. However, keep in mind that when you start working on projects it is very easy to get off schedule. For instance, the Api projects. These require a lot of research out side of fcc and there are a lot of rabbit holes. Also keep in mind that to get through it in that time frame, your not going to have much of a social life, and that derails a lot of people. So my advice is to aim for a year but be flexible. Also you will want work on projects out side of the fcc curriculum as you go and you should, but these will also slow you down and again there are those rabbit holes. Finally it is possible to get a job with just the fcc certs, but chances are you will need more than just those. So take a look at jobs for your area and what they are looking for and plan to study up on those things as well. Things like PHP/Angular/ Typescript ext…
