Guidance on Landing a Job as Full Stack Web Developer

Hi everyone,

I’m Marc, I’m writing my first post in the FCC’s forum.
I’m 23 years old, from Spain and I’m a Computer Engineering graduate, I graduated in July 2022. My final degree project consisted of developing a medical imaging program with Deep Learning on detecting an anomaly related to COVID-19.

I made a 2 month internship in the summer of 2020 as a junior programmer. I worked 1 month as a junior web developer from December 2022 to January 2023.
I only worked 1 month because I wasn’t following the company’s expected rhytm, I wasn’t prepared for and I didn’t put enough hard work as I didn’t push myself to learn the needed skills at home after work.
Both jobs were in my hometown.

This year I’ve done a C1 course of English in my hometown’s Official Language School. I finished the course at the beginning of June.

Since I got fired, I’ve been applying for IT and non-IT offers. I applied for non-IT also, because I’ve a need to socialize and to be economically independent from my parents, who I live with, which, by the way, I love and they always support me, but if I want to experience and enjoy more life I need to force myself to be disciplined.

Up until last week, I didn’t start focusing on creating projects or following tutorials. I procrastinated for far too long; it’s been a learning year because for the first time in my life I haven’t been in an academic course studying (school /high school/college) and I’ve had plenty of free time apart from English and gym. It has been tough to adapt but I’m ready to move on, because it’s the only way I’ll get a job and achieve my goals in life.

My focus is on getting an IT position, because I’m aware that most companies demand at least 2-3 years of experience, so, the sooner I get it the better and also because I want to make valuable all the hard work I put in university with my degree.
I’m looking for job offers daily in multiple apps (Linkedin, Infojobs, my university’s job hunting app…), and I’m applying or looking for in-person jobs in my region mostly or fully remote for outside of it.

Currently, I’m following a
Youtube tutorial on how to create a web portfolio. It’ll be my first web portfolio. I started with this project as I believe it’s key that I’ve my own portfolio, where I could add the projects I’ll do in the near future.

I plan on simultaneously start following this other tutorial based on full stack web development .

As I do have the basics of programming I think it might be better for me to go more straight to the point and follow YT tutorials and build projects rather than completing all the FCC courses related to full stack web development.

I’m focused on web development as it’s the most demanded field in my region. Most companies as the last one I worked for, use Laravel, Bootstrap, Wordpress… Once I’m done with the 2 tutorials I mentioned before, I’ll focus on learning these skills.
My plan is to study 4h a day in weekdays and 2h a day in the weekends.

Finally, I’d appreciate receiving advice on my roadmap and if you think my plan is effective, as I know I need to get disciplined, but I also want to be efficient in my learning process towards getting a job.

Thank you.

You don’t want to focus on machine learning or deep learning?

It’s not demanded in my region. To start in an entry level job my best option is to get into web development.

Hola,

Any reasons for getting into Full Stack Developer role ?

Why don’t you start with Web development and later on job learn backend as well ?

As you’re Spain, you can easily move to Germany for getting job as intern / jr engineer, atm Germany needs loads of IT professionals and they are hiring in tons from across globe. Even loads of nice startups in France, Norwegian countries as well.

I suggest you start building your github portfolio projects, check out https://www.frontendmentor.io/

For next 1 or 2 quarters spend time to build as many projects as possible. Later start applying through linkedin

For English language, join local club or create yourself a club with people of any age group who wish to learn English language.

All the very best.

Gracias,
Vikram

Hi,

As I said, my focus is on training myself to become a Full stack Web Developer, because it’s the most demanded job position in my region.

My focus is on working in a local company, I’d only consider working for an abroad company if it’s a fully remote position.

I’ll check out the link you sent me to build projects.

I’ll focus on building projects and applying at the same time, in case some opportunity comes up.

In terms of English, I can follow it well, now even more after having finished the C1 course I mentioned in my original post.

Thank you.

Maybe it’s “the most in demand” but it sounds like you are more qualified for data analysis or machine learning, from the sound of your final project. Those aren’t exactly dead fields.

Have you tried looking for those jobs, or you’re just not interested? It seems like you’re looking for a job that you didn’t study for (web) when it would be easier to get a job that you studied (data analysis or machine learning).

Anyways, that’s my two cents, up to you.

I don’t want to close any door, I’m open to work in a Computer Engineering field, that it’s what I specialized in. I’d like to work in this field because it’s what I studied the most, but I’m also aware of how the market is around my region.

This week I’ve applied for remote offers that are in Spain, but outside of my region. I applied in these offers because they offered training, which is the type of offer I’m looking for the most, so even though I prefer to work in-person, if a remote opportunity presents and it could be ideal I won’t discard it.

Today I’ve done an interview with a member of Human Resources of one the companies I applied for (junior web developer position) and she told me that I’ll do an interview directly with the company soon, so let’s see how it goes.
I’ll be applying for other offers, so that I could compare and also I’ll be training myself specially through YT tutorials, because they can get more straight to the point and I could get the basics sooner to start building projects.

I’ll keep you updated. :grinning:

Cheers everyone. :muscle:
