Have I overdone it with my portfolio? (*updated)

All the good words are deserved here.

I would get rid of that animation when hovering the send button at the bottom. It’s not quite what you’re attempting to achieve here. For showing off it’s quite “naaaaah”, quite basic effect. Not like the rest of the site, which i loved from the first sight

checked link on iPhone. The scroll was not smooth enough. Nice design, check on mobile yourself

Good luck job hunting. Really impressive

First of all thanks for sharing, the site’s awesome! Second, we shouldn’t absentmindedly bash on the critics, this is exactly why it’s shared, for critique.

I’ve only seen the page on mobile (iOS 10 beta, safari). The dropdown nav bar icons are better when they’re circular, balancing the header jagged/sharpness. Currently, when you tap the dropdown they show a sleek and fun animation then it goes into some choppy animation that adds flat edges to the icons. Again, round is better here.

That’s really all I noticed first glance. When I got to the tools and languages I thought it was a background image. Then I saw it moving, so I started scrolling and swiping to see if parallax was in effect. Nothing happened, confused I went to put the phone down and saw all the icons lining up as expected on any other page. It uses the phone’s gyroscope. Ku-effing-dos.

And honestly, if you have fun with your page no one is going to knock you for it. It’s your page, it’s exactly where your best should be. On a logical note: compared to most stark dev/des pages I’ve seen, this is highly contrasting the minimal but mostly lazy aesthetic. This shows you’re willing to explore and bring all those parts into a cohesive experience, give the user new perspective and make it an interaction rather than a cv.

All I have to say is wow.

Yes it has a lot of stuff but it looks cool. That is something that I would not do on every project but I like your portfolio as it is.

U need to seriously account for people with motion sickness  So many things moving and I’m feeling bit dizzy. But looks so cool nonetheless

Thanks a lot for feedback, particularly thanks for letting me know about the menu, there were some problems on iOS which I thought I solved, but apparently I hadn’t - will definitely look into it. Yes, the gyroscope should be working for both the intro background tilt and floating skills icons.
I hope potential employers will have the same opinions as you about the exploration and interactivity

also, something that inspired me recently. http://www.rleonardi.com/interactive-resume/

Catico,

Your portfolio is great! The point of a portfolio is to showcase your abilities, and with this site you do it very well.

Since this is going to be used for potential employers, I say keep it all and give them an opportunity to critique it. Better yet, send it to your employer picks and ask them to give you feedback to improve your learning. Just the act of opening up a simple dialog with employers to discuss your skills may prove to get your foot in the door.

In all, code well done.

Cheers,

David

Hey Catico,

Great portfolio, the loading time on the page was slow. I clicked on the calculator app and I pressed clear, and i started typing my numbers in, but when I pressed enter or =, it gave me 0. However when I clicked on numbers, then clicked on equal sign and then typed a couple of numbers in and pressed enter on my keyboard, it was good. I haven't done the other demos yet, but so far it looks super cool!

Wowzers that’s a cool portfolio.

I’m not the creative type so I’m worried my portfolio will look like a pile of poo compared to this and the other portfolios floating around out there.

Can this all be done using FCC’s curriculum as a base? Did you have a lot of prior experience in this sort of animation before you started FCC? It’d be really nice to be able to make something like this of my own in the future.

Wow, that’s incredible! Very, very nice job! It’s obvious you have a great eye for design and creativity. Wish I did.

You’ve mentioned that it took you about a month to create. I haven’t worked with Greensock before. How much easier did that make it for you? When I first looked at it, I assumed you had used only the technologies addressed in the FED course ,(CSS, JS, Bootstrap, jQuery), and my brain started to melt. LOL. If you had known exactly what design and functionality you wanted (not changing your mind along the way, I mean), how long would it have taken you to code then?

Thanks a lot! Greensock is great for animation (supposedly much faster than jQuery) and it’s very easy to pick up. It’s probably easier compared to when you do everything just in pure Javascript. The coding itself probably didn’t take that long maybe a week or two, but I researched a lot and also didn’t know how to make many of the things so I had to look it up and so on… it’s just a onepager so it shouldn’t take that long I guess.

Thanks! I’m not that creative either to be honest, but I researched a lot and went through a lot of amazing portfolios of other people and that sort of helped me a lot in getting an inspiration of what kind of things I would like to see in mine.
I didn’t have experience in any kind of animation (or front-end) before I started FCC, so I think FCC is a good base, but I have used other things that are not part of FCC so you have to explore beyond FCC as well.

I think it’s a great piece to show off your skills and creatively, it looks awesome but on Chrome v52 OSX 10.11.6 it kept jumping to the previous section when I was trying to check out stuff in the second and third sections and I found that really irritating but aside from that well done! A great advert for the benefits of FCC.

It is awesome. Which library you used for it? I want to know (Please mention)

Thanks! I’m using Greensock library.

Corporate WebSense blocks your site under the category “Elevated Exposure” due to some of the code on your site. Can’t say for sure what it is since I can’t see it.

Thanks for letting me know, I’ll look into it.

Thank you for sharing your talent and beautiful work. As you asked, here is my frank feedback based on many years of doing Usability Testing research for large websites for many years.

  1. I must agree with BenGitter (one of your first respondents) who suggested you stop the heavy animation on the first screen after a few moments. Otherwise, it actually becomes confusing as what the user is supposed to do to proceed.
  2. On your Skills screen please lose the drop shadows. They just don’t look good to me and almost appear like an “error” of things not lining up. It will be just as effective without the drop shadows.
  3. Finally, on your sample projects page, It drives people nuts if they cannot find a space on a page that doesn’t trigger more animation. You need to allow visitors to hover over each project without the cell immediately covering it up. Very frustrating. You can certainly keep some form of animation inside each cell, but it needs to be less intrusive and does not block the thing that attracted me to the cell in the first place. I hope that makes sense.

Clearly, there is a great deal you have to offer potential clients and hopefully, other aspiring coders like me.
