Would anyone like some mentorship?

Without knowing your goals it’s impossible to help with what to do next

Hello jefejeff, nice iniciative! I really appreciate.
Can you help me too? I’m not sure what path to take, I really like working with JS (Node, React), but I’m better with Backend than Frontend, and I saw people saying that are no jobs for web/mobile with JS as backend/fullstack, only frontend, what should I do? Migrate to Java, or are they wrong?

I won’t hurt to learn some java, but there are likely jobs for javascript as backend. That’s a large reason why node exists.

My advice is look at jobs in your area and see what they’re looking for. That’ll be the best indicator to follow.

Since node is newer as a backend language, there are likely more jobs for Java, so if you’re excited to use js for backend, look at smaller to medium sized companies. I haven’t looked up numbers, but my gut says that’s where there will be more node/js-backend jobs.

But… like I said, wouldn’t hurt to learn what java is better/worse at as well. It’s nice to have multiple tools in your toolbox.

Hey Jeff,
I would really love some mentoring. I work for an audit firm in the Analytics and visualization space and I would really love to upskill and maybe get promoted in the process

Jeff, thank you, I will join the many here and PM you. Thanks!

Hi @bgesora, feel free to PM me if you like

Hi Jeff,
I would love some mentorship, and I am impressed with your track record. I am transitioning in my career. I am currently learning Python, and also studying Amazon Web Services.

I would suggest you PM the email. Spambots can get to your email address if you post it in the forum.

+1 to mschlenker’s advice to remove the email from public. Bots eat emails.

But also… PM me if you have specific questions or concerns I can help with

hey, i’m a little late to the party. are you still responding to people?

Sounds good! I’ll shoot you a PM

Dear Jeff,

What a nice gesture to keep the mentorship alive. I know you mentioned it in “edit2”, but still i hope i am not to late.

For about 11 years ago i finished my IT education and start working for a big computer company as a engineers. Now 11 years later, i still work for the same company but in a more managing role. During the 11 years i got more and more off track from my goals/dreams, becoming a programmer.

Last summer, i was 34 years old and felt like getting to old to become a programmer. But my feelings and also my wife told me to start now than regret it later. So this year in February, i started the education IT software engineer. This is a home study and it will take about 4 years to finish it. This was my only option with a 40 hour job, wife and 2 kids.

So i hope to finally chase my dream. But it is very hard to stay motivated because of my age and the technology in programming i missed the past 11 years. Also i found out that i cannot remember stuff like when i was younger and when programming there are ALLOT codes you can use and possible need to remember. This also makes me a bit insecure.

But i am doing my best to stay positive and chasing my dream with zero experience in programming.

Sorry for the long intro… I am curious how you started with programming? There are so many languages, when did you know what the right language was for you? I understand that you learn by doing, but i find it hard to figure out where the start. I like the concept of “Codewars” very much, but i cannot even get registered because of my lack in experience.

It would be nice to know a mentor, who i can contact when i am struck, for questions, advice etc etc… But that’s up to you.

Hope to hear something.

hey, you still free?

HI! Yes I am here, what about you??

May I get mentored as well.

@sethstephanz Yes I am :slight_smile:

I think you’ll find other folks, even on this site, that are older than you (us) and are starting their coding journey. I don’t think it’s too late.

I am curious how you started with programming?

I started coding on my own while in middle school, just satisfying my own curiosity of how to build a webpage on my own. Html was my gateway drug :stuck_out_tongue: Eventually I wanted to make a program, etc. Then I went to college and did a computer science degree, got my first job, and they paid for me to get a masters’ degree in software engineering.

Feel free to message me with any other questions

I need some advice on starter JavaScript projects .
